“Unlearn and bring out what you already have,” shares Jay Shetty. Your full potential can only be maximized with experience. It’s not about being unqualified but being inexperienced. The more experience you gain, the inner being of who God created you to will be drawn to His purpose. When you protect your purpose, your purpose protects you. Purpose is like a rare gem that needs to be cared for.
Being all that you are comes with becoming who you were meant to be.
So much time is lost when we strive to be who we were not meant to be. It’s important that you take inventory of your gifts and talents and how they line up with your purpose.
What are your likes and dislikes?
What fuels your passion?
What amplifies your life and speaks volume to others?
What are you talented in and have the skills to accomplish?
For example, you can do all the work to play in the NBA but there comes appoint when your desires and skills must meet to maximize your potential. Just because you love to help people doesn’t necessarily mean you have to become a doctor. Your passions can far exceed the medical room to touch the world. It’s important to expand your vision. My passion was to become an eye doctor but as I pursued my degree, I found myself endless hours in the lab tutoring. My slot grew with college students wanting to be tutored in anatomy and physiology. As the doors quickly closed on pursuing becoming a doctor a new fire was born in teaching. Closed doors only open new doors with new possibilities and opportunities if you are willing to pivot and adapt. Step into the river that constantly moves because stagnant water will only keep you stuck.
Don’t Miss out on the Authentic you
“It’s not so much that we are losing our identities, but rather that we are no longer embracing false identities. If we hold on to what once defined us, we will miss out on the authentic identity we are being called to.”
― Dale Hanson Bourke, Second Calling: Passion and Purpose for the Rest of Your Life
We need to shed false identities like a worn-out garment. You are not an alcoholic. You are not a manic depressant. You are not a loser.
According to Ephesians 2:10. “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
In other words, you were created with God’s intention in mind. You were specifically designed for something bigger than yourself. How do I know that? The seed was planted by the God of the universe way before you even existed.
From Managing in the Dark to Leading in the Light
Dr. Hal Shorey from Psychology Today shares, “I remember a moment when I was 27 years old. I was a restaurant manager. But I never chose to be a restaurant manager. I got there the same way I had gotten anywhere I ended up in life, by simply making a series of yes-or-no decisions: “Do you want some of this?” “Do you want to go out with her?” “Do you want this job?” “Do you want to go into management?” (I said yes to all of those, by the way.)”
He goes on to say, “…so there I was, a manager with my ordering book, down in the basement of the restaurant taking inventory and doing the week’s orders. I wasn’t that good a leader at that point in my life, but I was a very good manager. I could do the ordering, maintenance, scheduling, payroll, and accounting like an expert.”
Dr. Shorey found himself at his lowest point broken and destitute in the basement of the restaurant. In the darkness as if a single spotlight shined on him, he pondered how it’s possible to have the skills to manage a million-dollar restaurant and yet lack the skills to manage his own life.
Have you felt that way? Living life among the dead instead of living your full potential among the living. What I mean by that is the desire to know deep down there has to be much more than existing. Well today Dr. Shorey’s Blog entries are helping transform thousands of lives across the globe. His willing to leave managing restaurant provided a new inner birth.
If God can renew your body completely with new cells every ten years, why can’t we have fresh start today. Shorey puts it this way, “In 10 years, most of the cells that make up your body today will have died and been replaced by new ones. So, your body will be totally new. Why can’t the you that you think you are, change that way too?” The truth is it can.
Climb High to be Who You were Meant to Be
Zacchaeus an unjust Chief tax collector in the eyes of the people in Jesus’s day made a choice. As Jesus was passing by Zacchaeus pushed through the crowds and climbed a tree to get a glimpse of the teacher. Something inside him tugged at his heart wanting to identify not with the former person but what he could be. Maybe he questioned, who is this Jesus and what is his draw?
Jesus spotting him commanded him to come down from the tree. His mind must have been racing 100 miles an hour, what must he be thinking of me?” A robber of the people, selfish and ego centered? Yet Jesus just asked for an invitation to his house. What transpired was an identity change shift.
According to Luke 19:7 “All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.” Instead of embracing his past, he determined to change his future by committing to giving back and serving others. The Word states, “But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now, I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”
Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Zacchaeus’ commitment to take on the new identity brought salvation to his entire house and saved his soul.
Imagine What life Could Be Like if You could just let go
- Become aware of your surroundings by allowing yourself to feel the moment. You don’t have to embrace the pain and depression but recognize the feelings around you that you don’t want. Take time to list what brings you joy and happiness. What are the things you can be grateful for and begin recounting them like counting sheep before you go to sleep.
- If you had amnesia in just the parts of your life that hurt you or caused regret would waking up be different? How so?
- Allow yourself time to imagine what type of life you want for yourself. Begin to replay it. As you spend time with God imagine all that He has for you. Don’t allow yourself to replay the negative record but take the needle off and change the track.
- Take a closer look in the mirror and look deep in your eyes. See what God sees. Someone amazing, incredible, and filled with amazing potential. If you struggle doing that then at least accept in 10 years from now you will be totally new, so why not start today.
